Ceramics in additive manufacturing – convincing quality down to the smallest detail
The production of the finest components down to the smallest detail in the highest quality has often been associated with high costs and therefore uneconomical.
An ideal solution to this problem is provided by suspension-based additive processes for technical ceramics, such as Digital Light Processing (DLP).
Where conventional manufacturing methods reach their limits, additive processes such as our 3D printing of ceramics reveal their strengths.
Using the DLP process, we can produce tiny components with perfect precision that would not be possible using conventional methods.
Previous generative manufacturing methods were often only suitable to a limited extent for prototyping. However, with the DLP process as a service provider, we can realize prototyping in series quality as well as small and medium series.

approach in Digital Light Processing (DLP)
The DLP process is a multi-stage additive manufacturing process for producing technical 3D ceramics. In this additive method, three-dimensional components are built up layer by layer by joining materials together.
Known as 3D printing or generative manufacturing, this technology has established itself in recent years as an effective way to produce complex components without the use of conventional tools.
In DLP manufacturing, a suspension of a UV-sensitive monomer resin and fine-grained ceramic powder is built up layer by layer to form a green body using CAD data. After each layer is applied, the component is irradiated with UV laser light, which polymerizes the resin and hardens the suspension. The polymer matrix acts as a binder between the ceramic particles and forms the basic structure of the component.
The green body then undergoes a multi-stage thermal treatment. The photosensitive polymers are removed during thermal debinding. This is followed by a sintering process that gives the ceramic component its typically high density.
The resulting products have a smooth, glossy surface and are known for their biocompatibility, heat resistance up to 1600°C, hardness, non-conductivity, wear resistance, food safety and chemical resistance.
Properties of technical 3D printing ceramics produced using the DLP process
Thanks to its robustness and performance, ceramics are often considered the material of the future. Our ceramics, which are additively manufactured using DLP technology, are particularly characterized by the following properties:
Chemical resistance to alkalis and acids
Low density
insulating effect
Low thermal expansion
High corrosion and temperature resistance
High hardness
Good tribological properties (friction properties)
Very high wear resistance
Excellent biocompatibility, making it versatile in medicine
High E-modulus (elasticity modulus) at high temperatures
Consistent series quality
gas-tight components
Shiny and smooth surface
Possibility to implement complex geometries
3D printing ceramics in application
The additive DLP process enables complex geometries for high-performance ceramics in the aerospace, medical technology and mechanical engineering sectors to be produced with high strength and precision in individual production as well as small to medium series quantities.
One important area of application is high-temperature technology, where materials must withstand temperatures well above 1000°C without fatigue or warping. The high degree of hardness and the comparatively low weight of 3D ceramics also support their use in lightweight construction. In addition, ceramic materials offer great potential in medical technology due to their biocompatibility and food safety.
We offer our expertise in the field of additive manufacturing of technical ceramics in 3D printing across industries, for example for:
analytical technology
plasma technology
space travel
medical technology
microelectronics
aviation
Thermal Analysis
microreactors
