STEATITE

STEATIT

Steatite ceramic is a type of engineering ceramic also known as magnesium silicate. It consists of a mixture of various clays and minerals, including talc (magnesium silicate hydrate), feldspar and kaolin.

Steatite ceramic has high electrical insulation ability, high heat resistance and high chemical resistance.

The properties of steatite ceramic make it suitable for a wide range of applications including electrical insulators, heating elements and supports for high temperature and high frequency applications. It is also used in the chemical industry, food processing and medical technology.

Steatite ceramic is also a popular choice for many applications due to its relatively easy processing and comparatively low price. It can be formed and machined by being pressed or extruded into various shapes, and then solidified by firing at high temperatures.

Manufacturing and Properties

Steatite is a silicate ceramic material based on soapstone with a proportion of 75 - 90%.
In addition to soapstone, clay and flux are also included.
Typical steatite materials have the composition 58 – 65% SiO2, 26 – 32% MgO, 3 – 6% Al2O3, 1.3% Na2O (at C 220) or 7% BaO (at C 221).
The glass phase accounts for 25-45%. The crystalline part consists of protoenstatite.

The mechanical strength values can be increased by adding zirconium oxide.

The typical shaping processes are dry pressing, extrusion, ceramic injection molding, slip casting and wet pressing.
